THE ROAD TO MARRIAGE EQUALITY
The Supreme Court Decision that Rocked the World. The first commonly known challenge to conventional marriage’s exclusion of same-sex couples in the United States came in 1970, when Joseph Baker and Michael McConnell applied for a marriage license in Minneapolis, MN. But it was an outlier until the advent of AIDS – when the estranged families of dying homosexual men surfaced to deny hospital visitation, to abrogate survivors’ inheritance of assets, and to drive them from the homes they had shared – that the LGBT community embarked on a protracted legal and political battle for Marriage Equality. GLENN BURKE | Openly Gay MLB Player
Described by many of the scouts as the next Willie Mays, Glenn Burke played major league ball with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1976-1978) and later with the Oakland Athletics (1978-1979). In the 225 games of his brief career Burke batted .237, hit 2 home runs, had 38 RBIs and 35 stolen bases. In 1977, after Dusty Baker hit a home run, Burke – who was the on-deck batter – gave Baker a high-five as he left the field and has since been credited with inventing the gesture. Burke was compelled to leave baseball after being involuntarily outed by team managers. In spite of many struggles, Burke was committed to being his authentic self and remained admirably upbeat. He has been an inspiration to gay sports enthusiasts for two generations. Sponsored by the Chicago Cubs.
